How big a backyard would you need to live off the land?

I love that while Jon and I are searching for our home he is thinking about having enough space for our garden :) I told him I want no less than 1.5 acres - those 4 acres we looked at are completely wooded, so taking down some trees and making furniture and flooring would work perfectly for us.
